How to Grow the Goji Berry Plant
Interested in growing goji berries? If so, you need to know basic information about this particular plant. The goji berry plant (scientific name Lycium barbarum) is a plant native to Mongolia, a country whose rugged terrain helped the goji berry plant to develop an extensive root system. In the United States, the goji berry plant has been found to grow and thrive well in Utah despite the near-drought conditions that exist in that area. The goji berry plant loves full sun so interested gardeners need not worry about the lack of shade when planting the goji berry plant. While basic information about the goji berry plant are given by owners Utah nurseries to interested goji berry plant growers, these nursery owners still are unable to provide information on how exactly the goji berry plant develops. What they do suggest, though, is that the goji berry plant is a plant that could be considered a bush or a vine. This suggestion stems from the fact that the goji berry plant looks like a bush plant with trailing vines coming out of its bushy center. The goji berry plant can survive in hot and cold weather; it is able to withstand low temperatures (-15 degrees Fahrenheit) and high temperatures (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The goji berry plant is best grown outside but it can also be grown indoors. However, if you decide to grow the goji berry plant indoors, the resulting plant will be small and you will need to use self-pollination if you want to produce newer goji berry plants. If you decide to go ahead and grow the goji berry plant outdoors, you need to know that the plant needs to be pruned when it reaches eight to ten feet in height or when the vine has grown to over 12 feet from the center. Pruning the goji berry plant is said to encourage the plant to produce more flavorful goji berry fruits. As soon as your goji berry plant begins flowering, you can expect goji fruits soon. The flowers of the goji berry plant come in purple and white colors while the goji berry fruits are red. It is not known what insect pollinates the goji berry plants in Utah, Mongolia and Tibet. It is assumed that the wind is the main pollination agent of the goji berry plant.
