What Research Tells Us About Goji Juice
The goji berry is a small, red berry that grows from a bush-like plant with vine-like branches. The goji berry plant is native to Central Asia, specifically in Mongolia, Nepal, Tibet and western parts of China. According to accounts, the goji juice and its healing power were accidentally discovered in 800A.D. by Buddhist monks. According to the story, the goji berries fell in the well where the monks got their supply of water. After a while of drinking the water with the fallen goji berries, the monks felt renewed vigor and became healthier. For centuries, the goji berry and goji juice were used in traditional Asian medicine. However, it wasn't until fairly recently that the healing and health properties of the goji berry and goji juice were put under scientific scrutiny and testing in the United States, Europe and the Mongolian Institute of Traditional Medicine. Initial findings in controlled clinical studies are showing promise that the goji juice does indeed have healing properties. If the goji juice continue to hold up to intense scientific testing, with results that can be replicated and validated, the goji juice can be the answer to many diseases including: cancer, tuberculosis, immune deficiencies, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, depression and insomnia. According to several studies that were published in the Journal of the Beijing Medical University in 1992, it was found that the goji juice lowered the number of antibodies that were associated with allergic reactions and other histamine-related syndromes like psoriasis. In 1993 anti-aging studies conducted by Dr. J. Zhang, the goji juice was found to contain secretagogue, a substances that acts on the pituitary gland, slowing down the aging process. Still in other studies where elderly people were used as subjects, it was found that incorporating the goji juice in their diet resulted to increased strength, improved sexual performance, better sleep and appetite, and lower susceptibility to diseases and infections. Goji juice was also found to neutralize superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that contributes to physical pain often associated with inflammatory conditions like arthritis, lupus and fibromyalgia. Goji juice also proved beneficial to cardiovascular and liver function. Those with vision problems experienced improvement after consistently consuming goji juice. In addition, goji juice was found to prevent gastric disorders. Of all the studies being conducted about goji juice, the most vital ones are those that focus on the anti-cancer properties of goji juice. In these studies, the test subjects who were given regular doses of goji juice developed strong tumor growth inhibitors, which helped reduce the spread of cancer. Based on studies, goji juice has a potential for being a supplement for preventing liver cancer. A 1994 clinical trial at the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai had subjects taking LAK/IL-2, an anti-cancer drug, along with goji juice. Seventy-nine subjects showed a regression of cancer. Treatment results were better compared to using the anti-cancer drug alone. Subsequent clinical trials showed that patients with malignant melanoma, renal cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer experienced regression of cancer when they took goji juice with the anti-cancer drug. Several clinical trials are being conducted in the United States and Europe and this has put the goji juice under heavy scrutiny in the medical community. Very soon, the small goji berry may be given the stamp of approval by medical professionals as a true miracle fruit.
