The Amazing Properties of Goji Berries
The international market is abuzz with the latest "miracle" fruit, goji berries. But what exactly are goji berries? Native to Tibet, Mongolia and parts in China, goji berries come from a vine-like and bush-lie plant that sometimes grows to a height of up to 20 feet. The goji berry plant is described by many people as a mix between a grape vine and a tomato creeper. Goji berries (scientific name Lyceum barbarum) are known by different names in the international market. Because goji berries come from China, they are often called "Chinese Wolfberries" or "Oriental Wolfberries." Goji berries are harvested by shaking the vines and letting them fall onto mats where they are dried up in the sun. Goji berries are not harvested by hand because they tend to turn black at the touch of the hand. When dried, goji berries look like raisins but with a very bright red color. Goji berries are popular in international market, particularly in the health and supplement market because of its many health properties. Goji berries are well known for their antioxidant properties. Dried goji berries are found to contain 22,000 units of antioxidants per gram. According to an Oxidation Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) testing, a person needs to consume a minimum of 5,000 to 7,000 units of antioxidants. Goji berries have also been found to have anti-cancerous properties. Dried goji berries have the Lyceum barbarum polysaccharide, a special type of sugar compound that is known to prevent age-related macular degeneration and other diseases. Goji berries are also believed to prevent leukemia from spreading in the body. A number of studies have found that goji berries aid in the production of cytokine in the body, thereby boosting the immune system.
